Today I read an article about how Christians use the word “blessing” too much in context to all of the items they have, for example, I got a new car…what a blessing or I got a bonus at work, I feel so blessed. It was making the point that we tie “blessings” too close to just being delivered “material things” and we lose sight of what a blessing truly is; what God is graciously giving us. I often feel blessed when good things happen to or for me. When I narrowly miss being in an accident, I feel blessed. When I hear from an old friend, I feel blessed. When my children are doing well, I feel blessed. When my grandchildren run to me calling out “Neena” and jump in my arms to hug me, I feel blessed! There are plenty of things happening in our lives that I believe we feel blessed by and as a Christian I had to give thought to when I use this term and what I use it for. A blessing…to be in God’s favor and protection. I hope that I always feel blessed, never taking for granted anything in my life; the good times and the bad. I have learned over the last year especially, how to feel blessed even by the bad experiences in my life. All things leading to wisdom and helping us to become the person we are. I know that I use the term, “be blessed” and “be a blessing” everyday when I drop my son off to school each morning. I often say, “have a blessed day” to those I pass throughout my day, at the supermarket or I say that I hope someone had a blessed day when I talk to them. Is blessing overused? I personally feel that if it’s used in the right context then it’s never going to be overused. I mean, how can we ever have too much of God’s favor and protection?
